Inspiration through the Decades: William Morris

William Morris was a British textile designer, poet, novelist, translator, and socialist activist best known for his contributions to the Arts and Crafts movement, which aimed to improve the quality of design and craftsmanship in industrial production.

Morris drew inspiration from the natural world and medieval/Gothic styles, using organic forms and patterns and reviving techniques and motifs of these periods in his designs.

Morris co-founded the decorative arts company Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (later known as Morris & Co.) in 1861. The company produced high-quality textiles, wallpaper, and furniture, and helped to define the Arts and Crafts style.

William Morris was particularly interested in textile design, and he created many iconic patterns during his career, including ‘Willow Boughs,’ ‘Strawberry Thief,’ and ‘Golden Lily.’
